Individual Project: 40 points – Due Date – June 6th

Objective: To gives students a forum to write their impressions about the Holocaust and assess the students’ level of understanding about key events from this period.

You will be creating an essay that discusses your knowledge of the Holocaust, how your book relates to this, and your impressions of these events.  The final copy needs to be typed and will be at least two pages, double spaced.  You need to follow these guidelines in creating your essay:

  1. Your introduction needs to begin with a quote from either your book (look back at your response cards) or another source that has meaning for you about the Holocaust.  You need to explain why you chose this quote as part of your introduction.

  1. The next part of the essay needs to discuss the events of the Holocaust.  This is not a question and answer format.  You can write answers for these questions and then use this information in creating your essay.  You need to cover the following points:

q       What is the Holocaust and when did it take place?

q       How was Hitler able to gain power after WWI in Germany?

q       Why were the Jews singled out for extermination?

q       What was the “Final Solution?”

q       What were some of the first measures taken by the Nazis against the Jews?

q       Did the Jews try to fight against the Nazis?  How successful were these efforts?

q       What is a death camp?  Where were some of them located?

q       Why did the Jewish people have trouble believing the horrible truths about the camps and the gas chambers from people who had somehow escaped?

q       How did other countries react to the Nazis plans for the Jews?

q       How many Jews and non-Jewish civilians were murdered during WWII?

3.      This part of your essay needs to discuss your novel and how it fights into the Holocaust study.  You need to incorporate these ideas into your writing:

q       The name and author of the book

q       A brief summary of your book

q       What you thought of the book and why

q       What message(s) you thought the author was trying to send about the Holocaust

q       Examples that support your opinions

  1. Your conclusion needs to give your final impressions of the events of the Holocaust.  You can do this through another quote or suggestions on what the world can do to prevent this from happening again.  Your conclusion needs to leave the reader thinking about what part of this unit has had the greatest effect on you personally and why.
